Lots of fence building
Good Evening Everyone!
There has been a lot of fence building happening around here. I am super excited to tell you that we have all of the wooden fence completed! We are also putting a fence up the hill from the goat pasture toward the pig yard, so the goats have a hill (which they really like) and some nice big shady trees to lay under during the hot summer days. We just about have it finished as well. A huge thank you and because of the extra donations we were able to hire our neighbor/friend to help me continue moving forward on things. Not to worry, Eric has been overseeing the projects, checking on us often and making sure we aren't messing things up. ;)
As if Chino's new fencing wasn't enough, it seems he also wanted us to add some additional fencing up at OUR house in his current spot... on two separate occasions we came home last week to find Chino standing in the driveway, wondering where we were and possibly where he was too. He was stepping on the older 4x4 fencing in the backyard to get to the high limbs on the delicious trees, but since it wasn't designed to hold a 300+ lb goat, the fence would basically collapse under him and he would find himself on the other side, which, wasn't so bad....lots of hills and delicious plants to keep him occupied. But, both times we found him outside the fence he seemed so relieved we were home and walked right back in the yard with us. We were fairly confident he wouldn't wander off too far, but if our dog Maya decided to follow him, who knows where she would end up. So, yesterday Eric had his first day back at "work" and we used some left over 6' fencing from the pig yard to put a new back fence in our yard. Needless to say, Chino seems to be pretty happy with the new fencing... it has nice foot holds (so much for the 'no climb' label) and allows him to reach those higher branches.... ha ha, yes, Chino, just for you! :)
Today we were we back on track, working on his future home. One of the next tasks is the pasture itself, ridding it of toxic and noxious weeds. Not a small feat in a large pasture, but a necessary one. I mowed all the bad weeds down trying to leave as much of the nutritious, safe grasses and native plants as possible. It's starting to look like a real goat home and is getting quite exciting. Still lots to do, but everyday we are closer. Meanwhile, when Chino isn't browsing on the trees you can find him taking a nice relaxing nap in his favorite spot, under our clothes line.
