Goats have a New Barn!!

October 28, 2020

Good Morning!

It has been too long since our last blog post, but rest assured that it is not because of the lack of activities happening!

We are super excited to share with you that the goats have a New Barn!!! ….and so do I! ;) Tee-hee.

Thank to Eric (and Luna) for all their incredibly hard work. Eric built the barn all by himself, with Luna by his side for literally every step of the way. She was out there with him rain or shine, clouds or snow, cold or hot, first thing in the morning, and also in the evening. She would take every step with him. Adding her lovely bark to the rumble of the tractor, buzzing of the saw, knock of the hammer and any other loud noise that may have occurred.

Eric has been interested in wood working and building for quite some time and when we moved to our current location and gained the space for a work shop, he started acquiring more and more tools (mostly off of Craigslist). He started with smaller projects…a stool here or there, shelves, tables, chairs, and then started expanding to a massive set of stairs, the other animal’s houses, a covered deck on our house, and now a small barn.

We built a two stall barn, so the goats have one side and I have a room for supplies, food, medication, and a place to do health checks , etc. on the other.

We weren’t sure the goats would be pleased about moving as they seemed pretty settled in their current space, but were they ever excited! I think they knew all along the new space being built was for them. It sits higher than the pasture and has a view. Goats love to climb and they also like to be up high. *Fun Fact: some goats climb trees! :)

Chino and Tulips are also curious creatures, and Tulips was already exploring around and helping me tear down the old temporary fencing.  Chino waited patiently until I had the old fence dismantled and then he checked out the new barn as well. Helping themselves inside before it was ready and trying out each other’s side of the stall. Chino made a very brief trip back to the old space to make sure nothing was left behind, then immediately settled into the new.

As the days get shorter and the sun gets lower on the horizon, the placement of the new barn still captures some of its heat throughout the day. Instead of extension cords, portable batteries and generators to provide heat and cooling, they now have wired in electricity. Tulips has a window that allows her to gaze out at the world at all times, as she prefers.

In the future, we hope to add on and make it a full barn, but for now we are extremely grateful for the upgrade. It gives us comfort and joy to see the goats so happy in their new spot that we designed specifically for them.

Eric said, “Well, its no Barn Pros barn.” (which is a WA local barn kit company that designs and constructs beautiful barns.)   I said, “No… its not. But anyone can get a Barn Pros Barn, only Ridge 2 River can get an Eric Barn.”
